Artist's Description
One of the most successful aircraft of World War Two was Republic Aviation's big and tough P-47 Thunderbolt, aka "Jug". This beautifully restored survivor was photographed at the Mid-Atlantic Aviation Museum's annual air show in Reading, Pennsylvania. Built in 1945 at Republic Aviation's Evansville, Indiana, plant, its long history includes service with the Peruvian Air Force and one crash landing in Tulsa when its engine got real quiet on take-off. Not good. Its actual serial number is 45-49295 but it's painted to represent 42-26671 as flown by Capt. Benjamin I. Mayo, commanding officer of the 82nd and 84th fighter squadrons.
NOTE: The Fine Art watermark visible in preview windows is not on any print.
About Don Struke
Although I don't call myself a photographer, I have taken thousands of photos through the years and now and then I end up with one that is printworthy. Well, at least by my standards, which might be somewhat less than the norm. But you are the judge (continued below). PLEASE CLICK ON AD TO LEARN ABOUT THIS SITE I'm fortunate enough to have enjoyed a rather varied background in marketing, advertising, public relations, print and electronic media, TV production, and publication design in both corporate and non-profit organizations. As my list of photos on Fine Art America slowly grows, it should be apparent that my interests are all over the place, from the sight of beautiful flowers and landscapes to aviation and high performance...

My grandfather is Cpl R. L. Thuot and I've only seen this plane in a book where his name is in the seam. This picture is amazing and will surprise my mother. Thank you for capturing this, truly more meaningful than you'll ever know.
