Description
All of the photos in this collage except mine (center) are public domain images via the U.S. government (in case you're wondering). The caption for my companion photo (the same P-38 by itself) has details about P-38s in general. In this collage I call your attention to Charles Lindbergh (lower right with Tommy McGuire) who flew combat missions in the Pacific theater as a civilian advisor, sent to help teach young airmen how to get maximum range in their aircraft (P-38s and Corsairs). That's 40-victory ace Richard Bong, top row left of the color photo. Top row, right, is the P-38 Putt Putt Maru flown by Charles McDonald, who ended up the war with 27 aerial victories. In the top left corner is Women's Air Service Pilot (WASP) Ruth Dailey, getting ready to deliver a factory-fresh P-38. It had that new fighter plane smell, I bet.
