A close-up shot captures a black snake with smooth scales and an alert expression as it slithers through the grass. Its eyes are focused and the surrounding vegetation hints at a natural, outdoor habitat.
The Black Racer (or Eastern Racer) is a long, slender non-venomous snake with large, prominent eyes. Adults are black or bluish/black with white or whitish markings on the chin and throat. Juveniles are gray with distinct reddish-brown blotches running down the back of the head and body. I found this one enjoying some warm springtime sunshine along the lower portion of the Cullers Trail in Shenandoah River State Park, near Bentonville, Virginia, and got in one last photo as he slithered off into the grass at the trail's edge.
