Artist's Description

One of the most successful medium bombers of WW II, the Mitchell B-25 is represented well by the beautiful Yankee Raider, a B-25D-35 built in 1943. It was transferred to the RAF 10/44 and used in Canada for training. After WW II it was sold on the commercial market, with the first U.S. buyer acquiring it in 1969. Back in 1946 or so you could buy a B-25 for around $8,000. Before you think that's some bargain, in today's dollars it's about $95,000. For that money, you got a 275-mph, 1,500 hp, 2700-mile range airplane that can carry 15,000 pounds of luggage. (But gulping about 125 gallons of fuel per hour at about $5.70 per gallon in June 2011 prices.) It's worth mentioning that in 1946, Paul Mantz bought 475 surplus military aircraft, including 10 B-25s and more than 100 B-17s, for $55,425.68, an average of $116.68 per aircraft. I photographed "Yankee Raider" at the Mid-Atlantic Aviation Museum in Reading, Pa.

About Don Struke

Don Struke

Although I don't call myself a photographer, I have taken thousands of photos through the years and now and then I end up with one that is printworthy. Well, at least by my standards, which might be somewhat less than the norm. But you are the judge (continued below). PLEASE CLICK ON AD TO LEARN ABOUT THIS SITE I'm fortunate enough to have enjoyed a rather varied background in marketing, advertising, public relations, print and electronic media, TV production, and publication design in both corporate and non-profit organizations. As my list of photos on Fine Art America slowly grows, it should be apparent that my interests are all over the place, from the sight of beautiful flowers and landscapes to aviation and high performance...
