Of course that's FERRY, not "Fery"...although on the Internet they sound the same :-)

history in pastels. lovely.

Don Struke replied:

Brenda, thank you. I've been to Harpers Fery probably 20 or 30 times through the years and for an old town there's always something new to photograph. I do wish that red No Parking sign was not there.

Thank you, DiDi! Harpers Ferry is a photographer's bonanza. This street is so New Orleanish.

Artist's Description

NOTE: The Fine Art watermark visible in preview windows is not on any print.
Few American Civil War towns changed hands as often as Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. This old building was seen by many a Yankee and Johnny Reb soldier. To the right of this location fewer than a hundred yards away, slavery abolitionist John Brown tried to incite a revolution by seizing the Federal Armory in 1859. Commanding the U.S. troops who took him prisoner after the killing of a number of participants on both sides was Robert E. Lee. One of Lee's officers was young army lieutenant "Jeb" Stuart. Witnesses at Brown's hanging six weeks later included Walt Whitman, John Wilkes Booth, and another U.S. officer who later joined the Confederacy with Lee and Stuart, Thomas Jackson, who became known as "Stonewall" Jackson during the first Battle of Bull Run in 1861. Harpers Ferry is loaded with Civil War history, as are many small Virginia towns.

About Don Struke

Don Struke

Although I don't call myself a photographer, I have taken thousands of photos through the years and now and then I end up with one that is printworthy. Well, at least by my standards, which might be somewhat less than the norm. But you are the judge (continued below). PLEASE CLICK ON AD TO LEARN ABOUT THIS SITE I'm fortunate enough to have enjoyed a rather varied background in marketing, advertising, public relations, print and electronic media, TV production, and publication design in both corporate and non-profit organizations. As my list of photos on Fine Art America slowly grows, it should be apparent that my interests are all over the place, from the sight of beautiful flowers and landscapes to aviation and high performance...
